FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much prior volleyball experience do I need to have to be on the team?

A majority of our players have at least a few years of experience from playing on club and varsity teams in high school, but we still take players who have a minimal background but are eager to learn the sport, contribute to the team, and demonstrate a good work ethic. We encourage anyone who is at least remotely interested to come and try out.
When are tryouts and how do they work?

Tryouts are only held in September, typically a few weeks after classes begin for the fall semester at WashU. However, if you are unable to play in the fall, do not hesitate to send an email to washuvball@gmail.com explaining your situation, and maybe you can come join us starting in the spring.
We usually have 2 sets of tryouts, and it depends on the amount of people who come out with whether we make cuts after each tryout or after the end of both tryouts. We do not have a set number of people we are trying to take each year; we simply look for people who we believe can contribute to the team.
How many tournaments do you go to?

We play in tournaments year-round before going to NCVF Nationals, which is typically at the beginning of April. In the fall we usually play in 3 tournaments throughout the semester, and in the spring we usually play in 4, including Nationals. The tournaments in the fall are day-long and give us preparation for conference tournaments we play in the spring, which determine our ranking going into NCVF Nationals. Conference tournaments are 1-2 days long, and Nationals is 3 days long.
Where are the tournaments?

The tournaments in the fall are usually within a 2 hour radius of St. Louis, and we often play at Saint Louis University (SLU). We sometimes host a tournament in the fall, so one of the tournaments will be at Wash U. In the spring, conference tournaments can be hosted by any of the teams in our conference, the Midwest Plains Volleyball Conference (MWPVC), so specific location varies. However, they are usually no longer than a 4-5 hour drive away from Wash U.
How much does it cost to play?

Dues are paid on a semiannual basis to contribute to expenses for practice gym space, tournament entry fees, travel costs (flights, hotel rooms, etc.), and equipment. We have separate dues between players who travel to the national tournament/regional tournaments and those who just practice. For people on the traveling team, dues are around $100-150/semester, and for people who just practice, dues are around $50/semester.
How do I get on the email list?

Before fall tryouts, we have a booth set up during the Fall Activities Fair during the first week of classes at Mudd Field. If you are interested in joining but are unable to come to our booth at one of these times, email us at washuvball@gmail.com to let us know.
